2013 AUGUST YEARLING SALE

LOOK OUT FOR THE CLASSIC STARS OF TOMORROW

The 2013 renewal of the Deauville August Yearling Sale will take place from Saturday 17th to Monday 19th August, astride the superb Prix Morny weekend. It will be followed, on Tuesday 20th August, by the very first edition of the v.2 Yearling Sale, which will offer, in a separate catalogue, 123 youngsters selected for their precocious type.

The August Sale catalogue, now available on www.arqana.com, is split in two parts and comprises 376 top-notch yearlings, which will go under the hammer over three days, instead of four in previous years. Part 1 includes 188 lots who will sell on Saturday and Sunday evenings, starting at 5:00 pm each day. Part 2 also numbers 188 yearlings, who will sell during Monday’s session, starting at 1:00pm. 76% of the yearlings in the whole catalogue are eligible for the generous “owners’ premiums”.

The Deauville August Sale stands out as the best source of top three-year-olds in Europe this season, with French Classic heroes STYLE VENDOME and FLOTILLA as its major flag-bearers. The Castlebridge Consignment’s draft is headed by the first foal, a Galileo filly, out of Gr.1 July Cup winner FLEETING SPIRIT and an Arcano half-brother to Gran Premio di Milano (Gr.1) and Derby Italiano (Gr.2) scorer BIZ THE NURSE. Ecurie des Monceaux sends a Galileo half-sister to Prix de Diane runner-up CHICQUITA, and Coulonces Consignment, a Dubawi half-sister to the Group winners ROYAL BENCH and MEMPHIS TENNESSEE.

Source of the leading three-year-olds in Europe this season

Graduates of the 2011 renewal have shone at the highest level across Europe, headed by the Classicwinning pair FLOTILLA and STYLE VENDOME, who cost €120,000 and €92,000 respectively.

The former put up an impressive display in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (Gr.1) last year and came back to land the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (Gr.1) on her seasonal debut. The latter, a Listed winner at two, took the Poule d’Essai des Poulains (Gr.1) in great style – the runner-up DASTARHON was also purchased at the Deauville August Sale, for a price tag of €100,000. Across the Channel, TORONADO, a €55,000 bargain, made his mark as a juvenile when landing the Champagne Stakes (Gr.3). He came back at three to take the Craven Stakes (Gr.3), ran 4th to DAWN APPROACH in the 2000 Guineas (Gr.1) and bounced back to his best when 2nd to the same champion in a breath-taking edition of the St James’s Palace Stakes (Gr.1). The winner of the Critérium de Saint-Cloud (Gr.1) at two, MORANDI ran a gallant 2nd to INTELLO in this year’s Prix du Jockey Club (Gr.1). He had been snapped up for €65,000 by his trainer Jean-Claude Rouget. The runner-up spot in both the Prix de Diane (Gr.1) and the Derby was occupied by a pair of Deauville August Sale graduates in CHICQUITA and LIBERTARIAN. Finally, André Fabre’s OCOVANGO won a

Listed event in casual style at two en route to victory in the Prix Greffulhe (Gr.2) at three, and was an unlucky-in-running 5th in the Derby (Gr.1).

Leading sires to the fore

The catalogue abounds with yearlings by proven sires as well as young stallions who have been in the spotlight this season, including GALILEO, NEW APPROACH, DUBAWI, DANSILI, OASIS DREAM, MONTJEU, DANEHILL DANCER, PIVOTAL, CAPE CROSS, TEOFILO, EXCEED AND EXCEL, INVINCIBLE SPIRIT, SHAMARDAL, MONSUN, MOTIVATOR, REDOUTE’S CHOICE, KING’S BEST, HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR, ROCK OF GIBRALTAR, SHAMARDAL,PIVOTAL, ZAMINDAR, ACCLAMATION, DALAKHANI, LAWMAN, ELUSIVE CITY,KENDARGENT, etc.

Finally, Gr.1 winning stallions with their first yearlings in the catalogue include ALFRED NOBEL,ARCANO, BLAME, EQUIANO, LOPE DE VEGA, LORD SHANAKILL, MAKFI, PACO BOY,RIP VAN WINKLE, SILVER FROST, SIYOUNI and VALE OF YORK.

ARQANA President Eric Hoyeau commented on the August Sale catalogue: “At the time of writing, 4 out of the 15 highest-rated three-year-olds in Timeform’s European rankings are graduates of the Deauville August Sale. All other European sales agencies combined only have one representative in this elite group. It is a remarkable result for ARQANA, especially as the catalogue size and the average price of our August Sale are lower than other high-profile sales in Europe. We owe this achievement to all the French breeders who entrust us, year on year, with their best yearlings, as well as to their British, Irish, German and Italian counterparts who have repeatedly showed their faith in our sale by bringing top quality individuals to Deauville. This year, the catalogue has been reduced to 376 yearlings from 471 in 2012, which means that the selection was even more demanding. Buyers shall certainly enjoy reading it, and I bet they won’t be disappointed when they discover the horses in the flesh, comes August. I have no doubt that the champions of tomorrow will be found in this catalogue, as were the many three-year-olds who fly the flag for Deauville this year.”
