TOY WITH THE ENEMY (Viking Ruler x Hairini) was a NZD $40,000 purchase at the 2007 NZ Bloodstock premier sale by Belmont Bloodstock Agency.
My brief was to buy a staying type of filly with a little bit of residiual vaule. I found this filly in the Chesterfields draft run by former Olympic equestrian Blyth Tait. She is by Viking Ruler and at the time his progeny were not in vogue but she was out of a mare by Flying Firebird x Stravinsky.
Zabeel is such a great influence in a pedigree especially when looking for a staying type. The filly was leggy, tall & gangly who was always going to need time and had thrown more to the Zabeel side.
Being able to purchase her for only NZD $40,000 has turned out to be a cheap buy.
Her trainer Danny O’Brien has been very patient with her and training her to win at her first start over 1600m was a great training effort.
