To the casual observer, the win of Mendicity at Belmont Park on September 18 was noteworthy because of the ease of the victory.
More importantly the list of owners reveals a winning story. Mendicity (3 f Blackfriars – True Bloom) is raced by M C Yeo, D J Gabbedy, A J Buhagiar, P J Collins, D J Mc Donald, Beer, Bet & Bite Syndicate (Mgr: G E Cornell).
Making just her second race start, the Jim Taylor-trainee was strong at the finish to land the $50,000 Westspeed 3yo handicap over 1200m and she looks a likely sort to win further races with the Champion Fillies Stakes (Gr 3) on November 12 a likely target.
A $26,000 yearling purchase by Belmont Bloodstock from the Durham Lodge draft at the 2010 Magic Millions Perth Sale, Mendicity is raced by a group of owners from a multitude of directions.
“Peter Collins is one of my old friends from school and this is his first horse,” Gabbedy explains. “For him to have his first ever racehorse win at Belmont is the thrill of a lifetime for Peter & his race loving parents.
When Mendicity won she also collected a Westspeed bonus so connections collected $47,000 for their first place so they are now out of the filly & everything else is a bonus.
Part owners Craig Yeo & Tony Buhagier have experienced success at the highest level being part owners of Gr 1 winning mare Ellicorsam.
